https://ecosoberhouse.com/, one of the most abundant isoflavones in kudzu root extracts, is a known vasodilator and is approved for such use in China following coronary infarction and stroke (Wu et al., 2014). In spite of the compelling preclinical and clinical evidence of its efficacy, the precise mechanism of action of kudzu in reducing alcohol consumption is not currently known. Prior studies of its antidipsotropic effect have focused on taste-aversion, alterations in alcohol metabolism or effects on neurotransmitters. Overstreet et al.’s study provides cursory evidence that a taste aversion mechanism is not likely. Increases in 5-HIAL have been shown to be correlated with decreased alcohol consumption in hamsters (Keung et al., 1995).

  • We are cognizant that alcohol abuse induces severe effects on brain reward circuitry affecting stress/anxiety as well as reticular formation in the brain.
  • I’ve read numerous articles over the years promoting the natural herb Kudzu as an excellent way to reduce alcohol cravings.
  • The bitter compounds contained in Declinol can promote better health overall, while also helping to better ensure that the TAS2R receptors in the human gut are stimulated adequately.
  • “We suspect it may work because it increases blood flow,” he says.
  • Researchers found that the kudzu extract had no effect on alcohol cravings, but it reduced the number of weekly alcoholic drinks by 34–57% .

kudzu for alcohol cravings are structurally similar to 17β-estradiol and have been the subject of intense research regarding their effects on human health as agonists of the ERβ receptor. Whereas the B-ring in flavones is in the 2-position (e.g., apigenin, A), for isoflavones it is in the 3-position (e.g., genistein, B). Though there have been limited clinical trials of the single use of Gegen, it can be a potential candidate to suppress aging-related neuronal cell apoptosis and dysfunction of the memory system. In a study comparing cytisine to nicotine replacement, 40% quit on cytisine compared to 31% on nicotine replacement. Cytisine is a plant-based alkaloid found in the seeds of the golden rain tree .

The process mimics natural actions that take place within the gut to enable proper absorption of nutrients, especially phyto-nutrients and fat soluble vitamins. The body’s own process in this regard creates micelles, single layer or unilamellar spheres in the size range of approximately 100 nanometers that typically can transport single nutrients. However due to dietary and physiological inefficiency, this process can often be hampered. The technology utilized with Declinol creates multi-layer or multi-lamellar spheres that are readily available and can transport multiple nutrients simultaneously. The nature of these spheres, possessing several layers, also allows both fat and water soluble nutrients to be combined in the same sphere. Bitter herbs have a long and successful tradition of use for a number of health purposes .

Robinin in kudzu leaf has also been reported.(Saĭiad 1979b) Other constituents evaluated include daidzin, daidzein, genistein, genestin, tectoridin, kakkalide, formononetin, biochanin A, and plant sterols. In addition, morphological and anatomical identification studies of kudzu have been performed. They are now studying a single large dose before a planned drinking session to see if it works, too. After placebo treatment, three people drank five beers and one drank six. However, studies looking at the effects of kudzu extracts have produced mixed findings, Penetar says. More remedies are needed to help drinkers who overdo it cut down, Penetar says.

Potential downsides

As expected, I didn’t really feel anything after taking kudzu until I began drinking. I recall feeling a very slight prickly feeling in my skin after I’d had a few drinks, and a mild head rush. I did not feel more drunk than usual, but I definitely drank less.
